What is Ayurveda?
Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest medical systems and remains one of India’s traditional health care systems, but it is not merely a system of medicine, it is a way of life.
Ayurveda aims at determining an individual’s personal constitution (dosha), which is based on the unique combination of elements in your body. Your dosha will influence how you live in the world through your physical make up, the way you think, the way you move, talk, express yourself, and all components that make you, You. Through the study of food, spices, herbs, daily and seasonal rhythms, lifestyle & yogic practices, Ayurveda supports your whole being in returning to balance. The practices are aimed at improving digestion, nourishing the tissues, and understanding imbalance in the body and mind before it manifests in or further progresses into disease.
Ayurveda looks deep into the quality of a specific food to understand how it will process in your unique body. The qualities of food are based on how the specific food will heat or cool the body as well as the taste (or rasa). The 6 rasas: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent, and pungent will positively or adversely effect an individual’s health based on their constitution (dosha). When we eat for our constitution we create the most fuel efficient system which nourishes all of the tissues and reduces and prevents the build- up of toxins (ama) in the body.
Ayurvedic lifestyle and yogic practices based on an individual’s unique constitution (dosha) further create a life of balance.
